Fiber optic temperature sensors

Fiber optic temperature sensors offer complete immunicty to FRI, EMI, NMR and microwave radiation. They are suitable for high temperature operating capability, they are intrisincaly safe and non-invasive in their use and designed to withstand corrosive or other harsh environments. The accuracy of all temperature sensors is +/- 0,2 °C with a response time of 2 seconds. The fiber optic sensors are suitable for various applications, depending on the size and coating of the fiber optic sensor, and they can be used in multiple environments: e.g. laboratory, microwave, medical, wood drying, transformer and process monitoring.

The sensors are also available with spiral wrap or protection tubes, depending op the application. And all fiber optic temperature sensors can be used with the fiber optic temperature signal conditioners in our programme. The fiber optic temperature sensors are non-conductive. They consist of an outer jacket made out of teflon and at the sensor tip a GaAs-crystal (gallium arsenide).

The fiber optic temperature probe TS2 was designed for a wide range of applications, especially for the use inside of generators, power transformers as well as bus bars, R&D and industrial applications.

It offers complete immunity  to RFI, EMI, NMR and microwave radiation – the best choice for all challenges.

The standard temperature sensor TS2 has a response time of 2s. With an standard deviation* of ±0.2°C it allows precise and repeatable measurements. The coating of TS2 temperature sensor is made of PTFE, the fiber tip has a diameter of 1.0mm and has a serial ST-connector. For mechanical stability and applications e.g. in oil special protective coatings and hoses are available.

The fiber optic probe TS2 consists of a PTFE protected glass fiber and a GaAs-Crystal (Galliumarsenid) at the sensor tip. It is totally free of metal and immune to RFI, EMI, NMR and microwave radiation – therefore TS2 probes are explicit suitable for the use in high temperature ranges (-200°C to +300°C) as well as in aggressive and rough test environments.

All fiber optical temperature sensors can be connected to the fiber optic temperature measurement devices (FOTEMP), delivers accurate and complete reliable, stable and repeatable values. Starting at a light wave length of 850nm GaAs becomes optical translucent. Since the position of the band gap is temperature dependent, it shifts about 0.4nm/Kelvin.

The sensor cable can be up to several meters and kilometers long without influencing the accuracy of the measurement result. Other sensor lengths and connector types are available upon request.

The fiber optic temperature probe TS3 stands for expanded flexibility with usual Weidmann quality and is the best choice for application in RFI, EMI, NMR and microwave environments.

The fiber optic sensor TS3 guarantees exact temperature measurements within a range of -200°C to +300°C at a standard deviation* of ±0.2°C.  The jacket of the TS3 temperature probe consists completely of PTFE and ensures immunity to RFI, EMI, NMR and microwave radiation.

Unlike the  fiber optic sensor TS2, the T3 comes with the possibility of a customizable length of the probe tip from 10mm to 130mm. Thanks to their fast response time of 2s and a maximum diameter of 1.7mm the TS3 temperature probe is small enough to fit in even the thinnest openings inside a measurement environment to deliver reliable data in real time.

The fiber optic temperature probe TS4 is especially designed for the use in chemical aggressive and nuclear environments.Its increased resistance comes with no loss in accuracy and the temperature range. Its PTFE-jacket results in a complete immunity to RFI, EMI, NMR and microwave radiation. The temperature sensor guarantees a measuring range from -200°C to +200°C with a standard deviation* of ±0.2°C. The fiber optic temperature probe is completely non-conductive.

Thanks to its special protection the TS4 probe resists even high aggressive chemical concentrations inside the measurement environment – with a maximum diameter of 2mm.

The fiber optic temperature probe TS5 combines high resistance with a minimal probe diameter – especially suitable for catheter applications within a modern animal health technology setup.

The fiber optic probe TS5 provides measurement data at the speed of light with a response time of 2s and a standard deviation* of ±0.2°C. The sensor tip with GaAs-Crystal (gallium arsenide) comes with a diameter of 0.55mm being the thinnest fiber optic temperature probe of the Optocon product line. Moreover TS5 offers a variable length from 10mm to 600mm. The small size of the TS5 temperature sensor enable for the usage in medical applications, e.g. animal body temperature monitoring – the needed requirements on flexibility are completely guaranteed.

Through its PTFE jacket it is completely immune to RFI, EMI, NMR and microwave radiation. All fiber optic temperature sensors can be connected to the fiber optic temperature measurement devices (FOTEMP) and provide accurate, reliable and repeatable data.

The sensor cable can be up to several meters and kilometers long without influencing the accuracy of the measurement result. Other sensor lengths and connector types are available upon request.

Optical feedthrough - Weidmann

The optical feedthroughs are specifically designed for installation on tank walls and oil transformers. They have a leak-proof interface and require no maintenance.

On both sides there are standard ST connector. There are no moving parts or loose optical cables. It is best combined with the temperature sensor TS2 and FOTEMP4, four-channel temperature signal conditioner.

The 90° fiber adapter was designed specifically for the use in plant engineering and construction, but can also be used in areas with small space and requirements for small sizes. Technical modification in accordance with customer requirements for fiber diameter and fiber type are possible.

Bus bar adapter - Weidmann

The bus bar adapter is used to attach the fiber optic sensor to bus bars. The ceramic design makes the adapter very resistant to mechanical stress and it also acts as a thermal insulator against possible external heat influences.

Silicon protective wrap - Weidmann

To protect the fiber optic sensor in industrial applications, we offer this specially coated stainless steel with silicone protective sleeve. This is particularly distinguished by its high flexibility, tensile strength, and its transverse compressive strength.

Because of his light and fluid leaks the measurement result is not distorted by external influences. The protective sleeve is composed of a flat wire coil with glass fiber braid and an outer silicone jacket. The outer diameter is barely 5.6 mm. Due to the large temperature range of -60°C to +180°C results in a wide range of applications.

Metal protective wrap - Weidmann

The metal protective hose is made of a spiral-wound stainless steel tube. Due to his construction he is extremely robust and corrosion resistant. Therefore he provides to our fiber optic sensors a comprehensive protection at temperatures from -100°C to +200°C.

The protective tube is due to his small outer diameter of only 5mm very flexible. He is well-suited for any applications in the medical, pharmaceutical or industrial areas.

Cleaning set - Weidmann

To ensure accurate measurements and long life of our fiber optic sensors and instruments, it isnecessary to clean them regularly. Failure to do so can result in permanent damage to the connector caused by hard particles trapped between the fiber optic end faces. Use our high quality cleaning set for thorough and efficient plug and socket cleaning. It removes dust and dirt particles quickly and easily. We recommend regular cleaning, depending on instrument usage.
